How to Write Articles

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Whether it's for a magazine, newspaper, your teacher, or even wikiHow, writing an amazing article whittles down to one widely-adaptable technique. Here's how to use that technique to your advantage.

Steps

  1. Determine your topic. Exactly what are you going to write about? Brainstorm for ideas if you have to. When writing for wikiHow, you may even wish to refer to requested topics for ideas.
  2. Figure out who your audience is. Are you writing for a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced audience? For example, if you are writing an article about "Creating PowerPoint Slides," are your readers new to PowerPoint, or business people looking for advanced tips?
  3. Do your research. How well do you know the topic? Is it something you can write easily about with little or no preparation, or do you need more information from experts in the field?
  4. Decide on the length of the article. Teachers, magazines, and newspapers will often give you a limit. wikiHow articles, on the other hand, are often "as long as they need to be and no longer."
  5. Compile a list of possible sources for you to consult. This can include documents, internet research and people to talk to.
  6. Write either an outline or a summary of your article. This will help bring the concept of the article into sharper focus.
  7. Write the rough draft of the article as follows:
    • Tell your readers what you are going to tell them. This is your introduction. For example:
      • This article explains how to create a PowerPoint slide presentation. It covers the following information: choosing a theme, creating a title slide, and creating topic slides.
      • The information in this article is written for a beginner. The author assumes that you have never used PowerPoint.
    • Tell your readers what you promised to tell them. In this section you tell them how to choose a theme, create a title slide, and how to create topic slides.
    • Tell your readers what you just told them. For example:
      • This article taught you how to create a PowerPoint slide presentation. You learned how to choose a template, how to create a title slide, and how to create topic slides.

  8. Check over your piece for presentation.
    • Check for faulty information. Have you double-checked your facts?
    • Delete any unnecessary or contradictory information. The only time you should have information that doesn't support your topic is if you're doing a "point-counterpoint" piece.
    • Eliminate anything that is just taking up space. Don't fill your work with fluff. If you need to do more research, go ahead and do it.
    • Check for grammar and spelling errors.
    • Read it aloud to yourself to make sure the text flows smoothly.

  9. Rewrite the article as often as it takes.
  10. Turn in your completed article.

Tips

  • Neither the outline nor the summary for your article has to be in traditional I, II, III format. The point of formatting is to help you. If you feel you can find your focus by writing a list of incomplete sentences, then go for it. Later, if your teacher wants a formal outline, you can create one from the article itself.
  • By checking grammar and spelling errors last in the editing process, you won't waste any time by correcting those on something you may delete.
  • If you're writing for a newspaper or magazine and are new to professional writing, it's customary to introduce yourself and your story in a query or pitch letter. Find the name of the editor who will be handling your piece (i.e.; if you're writing an article about cars for a newspaper, find the name of the car-section editor). This information can be found in the masthead, a box containing the names of the editors, usually found near the front or comment pages of a publication. Write a catchy but brief outline of what your story is about and why that publication's readership would be interested in it. Also include a few lines about your experience as a writer. The tone of this letter should be professional, but affable and friendly. It is not the place to make demands, or admit your shortcomings as a professional writer. Discussing wages and freelance fees should come after the editor has accepted your pitch.
  • If you have no experience as a professional writer, do not start off pitching columns (opinion pieces). Columns are generally reserved for people who have either been working at a publication for a very long time, or for people who have a particular expertise in a field. If you're new to writing, start small. Think obituaries, human-interest stories and simple news articles. It's generally easier to start with newspapers than with magazines. Try writing for life, fashion, arts, cars or travel sections before pitching stories to news. These sections tend to be understaffed and therefore have a greater budget for freelance writers.
  • If you're interested in pursuing a career as a writer, be realistic. People who make their living as writers generally start to build their portfolio of published work as early as high school. It generally takes even the most dedicated writer several years before he can make a living off of the trade. In other words, don't quit your day job. Ease into writing gradually, perhaps doing freelance pieces while maintaining a more stable job part-time.
  • Take some courses in both non-fiction and fiction writing. Not only will they help with your work, but also you can make contacts in the business by getting to know your professors and fellow writers. This will help you to be taken seriously when you start pitching articles for publication. Being a good freelance writer means knowing how to write and how to network.
  • Make sure your article answers five questions: why, where, when, what and how.

Warnings

  • When writing for a newspaper or magazine, do not do so for free. Ask what their freelance fee is beforehand. Your pay will usually be calculated on a per-word basis. Your work is valuable. Writing for free demeans the profession and makes making a living more difficult for those of us who depend on freelance fees to pay the bills. (But if you're just starting out, volunteering to do some articles for smaller community papers, student publications and trade magazines is a great way to build your portfolio. Be warned that these publications rarely have the money to pay freelancers anyway.)
  • Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to write the article. If you don't, then you'll be rushing at the last minute to create something that isn't representative of what you can truly do.
  • Do not be a diva. Your work will go through several editors, copy-editors and fact checkers before being published. It will be changed. Pulling a temper tantrum is a surefire way to not be invited to work for that publication again.
  • Your reputation as a writer is almost as important as the work you submit, do not make errors or plagiarize. Copying something without attribution is the quickest way to get blacklisted as a writer. Keep your notes and source lists handy so that your editors can verify your work. If you do make a mistake, come clean immediately and apologize profusely.
  • Don't miss deadlines. Generally speaking, a late article is worse than a mediocre one.
  • Literary circles are small and gossipy. Don't say anything bad about a fellow writer or editor, ever. You never know who's married to whom.

Things You'll Need

  • Something to write with: computer, pen and paper, etc.
  • An email account to pitch and submit stories. (Something vaguely professional, no one will take butterflywings23@hotmail.com seriously.)
  • Research materials. Either go to your bookshelf, the library or find an expert on the topic.
  • Access to a database like Lexus Nexus or factiva. Be sure to see what others have already written on the topic.

Living in Complicated Reality

It's not easy to be me! Living with physical disability is a complicated test with no correct or wrong answers in it. All you need to do have limitations. Poor self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, being isolated- name it, I have been through it all! Most of the time, I’m always a victim of labeling. Some people will immediately tag me as "different and abnormal." It really sucks! Indeed, having physical disability with a weak immune system is like a thorn of misery filled with a lot of obstacles along my way.

When I was still in my late childhood, I had a hard time dealing with my self. Back then, I couldn’t understand my life. It was futile! I had no self-confidence even a bit. I hardly socialize with people. I was even afraid to talk to my own cousins in such a way that when I talked to them, they might suddenly laugh at me.

During my elementary years, I really felt ashamed with my classmates and my teachers. I didn’t even recite in class. I didn’t even have the courage to report in front of the class. I was certainly an aloof.

In high school, it’s my first time when I got the nerve to report inside the class. I remembered my first T.H.E. class reporting and I was very nervous then. My mouth was somehow dry and my voice was crack. I couldn’t relax and I really felt intimidated. My classmates may mock at me, I thought. Such a weird and strange feeling that time! On the other hand, I improved myself a bit during class participation. I learned to express my point of views. I had friends; however, I still had no identity on my own. I was still upset and confused about my purpose in this world. Life, for me that time, was completely a boring routine. I came to a point that everything was just useless and dull. I felt extremely inferior when I was with other people. My self-esteem that time was drastically low. Whatever I do or say, I felt criticized and condemned. I fulfilled some of my high school dreams yet my life was still hazy.

My father wanted me to pursue computer science in college but I prefer psychology. I know, computer science might be the most useful course for me but I wanted to unlock the mysteries behind human behavior. I grew up as a confused individual and that time, I decided to make a change and stand with my own decisions. Sometimes, I hate myself for being a handicap but no matter, I need to love myself no matter what body structure fate has given me, right?

Truth is, humans are more complicated than computers. Computers work in algorithms, the human mind is not. I can learn the whereabouts of web programming and all that technical matters even I'm not a graduate of computer science.

After college, I realized that life was really unfair. There were always labeling on my back even if you tried to please the people around you. You might think that the closest people to you are proud of your achievements but it turn out to be, they are not and they will nail you down until your ego will be smashed into pieces. If these people don't love me, I can't force them to do so.

Inside me, I know that the soul of my mom is always there to give me the courage I need all the time. Sad to say, the painful reality still remains the same. Like computers, our lives can also run in algorithms. You can have the choice to do what you think is your choice but there are still a lot of things beyond your control. Life has many divisions and you can't always have what you want. It is extremely frustrating to be a human being sometimes, what's more if you are a handicap!

That's life, it goes on no matter how horrible it is. Now that I have realized my own strength and weaknesses, I’ve also learned to balance my self-esteem and just move on whatever it takes. Whatever criticisms that will come my way, I know I can manage it. It really hurts to be criticized but I have to deal with it and there's no other effective way of solving your problems than moving yourself toward it.

Truth is, everything they say against me is only a mere opinion of their own and not a huge fact about me. In life, what matters most is how you see yourself in the crowd. If you see yourself as a loser then you'll become one. There's only one you and me in this world and whoever you are; boy, girl, young, old, gay, bisexual, sexy, ectomorph, introvert, extrovert, prostitute, doctor, handicap, mentally-retarded, jerk, player, white, black, tall, petite, athlete or nerd, you can still stand tall to make a difference.

Yes, life is, indeed, a journey filled with roadblocks and detours but people, myself included, CAN still be a real survivor and choose to survive their own circumstances.

As a handicap, fighting my own insecurities is the greatest battle I have to suffer. It's a curse of fate. It's not my choice to be like this but what can I do? Quit? A survivor has his own limitations, he can lose the game we call life but he never quits. He gets tired but is willing to outplay life whatever happens. For this, living in complicated reality is the true meaning of my existence.

Expect Less...

One important lesson you need to remember in life: Learn to lower your expectations.

As a human being, we tend to expect a lot. We have these standards in life and if these standards are not met, we easily get frustrated. Sometimes, too much frustration may lead to depression and without knowing it, you are diagnosed with a bipolar mood disorder.

I know it sounds quite impossible not to expect something. When you are interviewed for a job, its a normal feeling to expect that by any circumstances, you'll be hired. But no matter what you do, expectations can also destroy you. In some cases, expectations ruin your focus. It may also put your relationship at risk.

For instance, if you are in a relationship and both parties are expecting something from each other, what do you will happen? You know, I am not an expert in love but it has proven that expectations can take away all the spontaneity in a relationship. If both parties have too many expectations from each other, the relationship will run as if everything is written and proofread by an editor and may eventually result to misunderstandings and separation.

The point of the matter is, there are times that it just feels good to let it out. Just be yourself and no expectations will be made. Life can be a choice anyway so why live your life with expectations?

You are a human being and there are times that you need to act without boundaries; just free from every tags of life e.g. personal standards, social expectations, work-related expectations etc. Truth is, expectations are inside your mind all the time and it's up to you how you control it.

The Benefit of the Doubt

Do you feel frustrated with the imperfections of life? I am sure you are and believe me, I am not only frustrated with my life but I am sometimes like digging my own grave just to survive my agonies.

That's life anyway, what can we do? There are a lot of questions and doubts. It seems that our time and effort to earn money in eight hours during the weekdays is not enough. There are several detours we need to go through and no matter who you'll become, even you're the most richest man in the world, you are still imperfect.

No one is perfect, we are all aware of this but why are we still seeking for more? Why we can't just be contented and have the the time of our life everyday?

The answer: I don't know why. In my twenty-four years of existence, my life as a handicap has been a rough one. I didn't grow as a normal kid who can play sports with my family and friends. I am somehow a product of a family where the line of communication is dry. This is probably the reason why questions and doubts are in my mind all the time. There's even a time that I asked God why I am still alive when my life seems useless and I was planning to end it with a knife on my chest.

That's the way my life is. You can't blame me for my misfortunes. Sometimes, I live my life with the best gameplan I can have but sometimes, it feels like I am simply lost and wants to sleep to forget all the dilemmas.

That's life and you need to survive it! You always have doubts in your mind. Sometimes, you feel you have won something and at times, you are screwed. Truth is, doubts might be the secret ingredient in life to keep our spirits alive. God is trying to tell us that life without doubts has no benefits but if you are in doubt, you are crossing bridges and you'll go far.

Question is, why you always hate imperfections and self-doubts? Don't you realize that these "pain realities" as what we call it are the reason why we are alive? If you have doubts, it means you have something to lose and if you feel afraid, it means you are on your way to maturity and there's still a time to correct your mistakes.

Life is probably the hardest game we must play. Doubts, doubts and doubts: there will be doubts as long as we are alive and these doubts may rip you off or not, these still have benefits.

Writing A Product Review

One of my weaknessess as a content writer is writing a product review. Sometimes when I am tasked to write a product review, I just don't know what to write about it especially if I haven't no idea what that product is.

I know, writing a product review can be fun and easy. You'll simply need to say something about the product and without knowing it, you have already written 350-words at least. The problem with me is different. When I write product reviews, my mind is like crawling out of words and I feel so limited. I have written several review-articles mostly it's about mobile phones but to tell you the truth, I am not satisfied with the articles I've written. As I see it, the writing approach I have used is tight. It needs a hole in order to breath and I haven't nailed the central gist of what I should be writing about.

If you like to read a sample of my work for my client, click here.

Because of this dissatisfaction I feel, I web-research more tips on how I can write a better product review. Thank God, I found one! Most of the how-to articles I've read before were talking same things. Just blah, blah, blah and I really can't dig what's the bottomline.

For the benefit of the readers, I'll copy and paste the tips here and this how-to article is written by Pat Doyle.

Here's tip 1

"Know your product. To really know it, you should be using the product yourself, or at least have some familiarity with it."

Here's tip 2

"Stress the benefits of the product. Remember, there is a difference between features and benefits. Features are the objective facts about the product. For example, you can say that the product helps you to increase traffic."

Here's tip 3

"Don’t build too much hype around the product. Give it a good honest review. You might want to mention something you did not like about the product, not just the good aspects of it. It won’t hurt you to add something negative - it actually helps, since your readers see you are being honest."

Here's tip 4

"If possible, write about some real results you have achieved by using the product. For example, if it is an ebook about how to get more traffic, then tell about how it increased your traffic by 37%, or whatever the case may be. But don’t lie about it. Your readers can tell whether you are being honest with them."

Here's tip 5

"Don't do a hard sell. All you have to do is get your readers into a receptive frame of mind and interested in the topic."

Why You Need To Understand Yourself?

Understanding yourself is a process and it is not easy. As you grow older and smarter, you will experience various roadblocks. I know how it feels when you're having roadblocks and oftentimes, you feel lost of a sudden. In fact, breaking these roadblocks or icebergs in life is tough. Roadblocks never ends and whether you like it or not, it runs in circles.

Now, if you want to live happily, you need to learn how to understand the inner walls of your personality. Understanding your own personality might be the most precious gift you can award to yourself when everything around you seems hopeless. You can never be perfect and anyone can be smarter than you but when you have understood yourself the way you want it, there's nothing in the world you can ask for.

Understanding yourself means accepting both your strengths and weaknesses. It is seeing your bigger self instead of parts. For instance, failing your science laboratory exam made you think that you're the biggest loser in the world. It's OK to feel lonely after a sad event. Failing an exam is only a part of your life and not the whole. Truth is, there's really more you can do than taking an exam. If you want to cry, just do it but never give up. You might feel unwell after failing an exam but life doesn't end there.

Accepting your weaknesses will take time and it doesn't mean that your weaknesses outshine your strengths, you're a loser. If you think that way, you will also feel that way but if you are going to do something about your weaknesses, that's what you call Life.

Life seems unpredictable. There are questions and expectations in our mind all the time. You can't free yourself from your sorrowful fate. There's nothing you can do about it and the more sorrows you have, the stronger you'll become in defeating them but no matter what, you can still choose to understand yourself. Studying the way you behave and making sound decisions is what our life is all about and whatever happens, you need to survive the odds.

The Williams Sisters In US Open '08 Quarterfinals

It's confirmed that the whole world will once again see the Williams sisters on the US Open Hardcourt.

"A quarterfinal might be too early for the sisters to meet based on form, but perhaps more than anything else, the ranking system supports the cliché, “It is what it is.” If the sisters were ranked Nos. 1 and 2, they wouldn't have this problem. (usopen.org)

Venus said in an interview:

“I would love to win this championship. I have to meet her in the quarterfinals, and that will be a huge milestone to get by her to win this championship.”

While Serena backfires,

“It's my career and her career. I know she can definitely bury it. I have to do the same thing: just do what it takes to win.”

Who do you think win win?

But before the fight, you need to watch this amazing Venus-Serena final match at Wimbledon 2008.

If God Said "No"

I received this message few days ago from a good friend of mine and seriously, this message is inspiring. This message somehow changes the way I think.

Here it goes...

*** *** *** *** *** ***

I asked God to take away my habit.

God said, No.

It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.

God said, No.

His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience.

God said, No.

Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness.

God said, No.

I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.

God said, No.

Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.

God said, No.

You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.

God said, No.

I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.

God said...Ahhhh,

Finally, you have the idea..

QUOTES TO PONDER ON:

"To the world you might be one person, But to one person you just might be the world"

"Good friends are like stars.... You don't always see them, But you know they are always there"
